AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE OF SAN JOSE ANNOUNCES CLOSING
(December 1, 2008):

Sad news to share with all of you: we heard the very unfortunate news that American Musical Theatre of San Jose (AMTSJ) closed its doors this week. On its website, AMTSJ has published an announcement regarding its closing and the events which lead to this decision, which you can access via the following link: www.amtsj.org/other/importantannouncement.html

Charlotte and Joe have had a relationship with AMTSJ since 1988 when the organization was known as San Jose Civic Light Opera. As Stage Hands, we have had a relationship with AMTSJ since we founded Stage Hands in 2001. AMTSJ has been a national leader in providing accessible theatre, providing both interpreted and captioned performances for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, and audio description for its blind and visually impaired theatre patrons. We wish to thank all the staff members at AMTSJ who have worked so closely with us over the years at AMTSJ to provide accessible entertainment to the Deaf Community.

We also want to thank our amazingly skilled Stage Hands Interpreters and ASL Sign Masters whose commitment to excellence insured that the quality of the theatre's work on stage was always reflected in the high quality of the theatrical interpreting and translations of the dialog and songs. And thanks to all of our Outreach Coordinators who worked closely with us to keep the Deaf Community informed of upcoming ASL interpreted performances in the South Bay.

We particularly want to thank all of the Deaf audience members and their families and friends who came to see the shows at American Musical Theatre over the years. We will most certainly miss seeing your faces in the audience, and we leave our association with AMTSJ with the fondest memories of our lively pre- and post-show discussions, and so many positive comments from you saying how much you enjoyed both the shows and the work of our talented and dedicated Stage Hands Interpreters and Sign Masters.

Over the years, we saw children who came to the theatre with parents grow into young adults. We shared laughter and tears that the experience of theatre can evoke. We marveled together at the visual spectacles of shows like THE LION KING, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, CHESS, EVITA, MISS SAIGON, RENT, PETER PAN, HAIRSPRAY, MAMA MIA and this season's THE FULL MONTY and FLOWER DRUM SONG. And we will never forget the delighted looks on the faces of so many young students from the California School for the Deaf in Fremont, who marveled at the magic of theatre when they came to see the ASL interpreted student matinee of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST earlier this year. We appreciate all of your support for ASL interpreted theatre in San Jose, and we hope we continue to see you at other Stage Hands interpreted shows throughout the Bay Area.

So, AMTSJ's closing is very sad news indeed, and a great loss to the Bay Area theatre going community, both Deaf and hearing. We will keep you informed of any developments in the efforts to continue to have high quality accessible theatre entertainment in the South Bay.
